A significant part of construction projects are MEP installations (mechanical, electrical and plumbing). The construction of buildings is usually managed by civil engineers or architects, but as far as I know, both of them do not get even the minimum knowledge about these work at the universities. They acquire this knowledge mainly on the construction site, when they start their professional career.
Engineers who manage the construction of complex facilities must understand the installation systems well enough to be able to oversee the design process, coordinate the works and follow the time schedule, discuss claims etc.
In the texts I am preparing, I will try to summarize my knowledge of MEP installations, which I have gained on various projects, and I hope that it will be of help to young colleagues.
Some of the topics that these texts will cover are:
Cooling and heating
Fan coils / chilled beams
Core heating /cooling
Air handling units (AHU)
Fire dampers, smoke dumpers
Power supply cabling, cable trays, busbars
UPS device, central battery system
Extra low voltage
Fire detection and alarm, public address system
TV system installation
Carbon dioxide detection system
Emergency assistance call
